Beginner's Guide to Jet Skiing in Chicago

First time on a WaveRunner? Here's exactly how your Skyline Jetski ride goes.

Never been on a jet ski? Here is exactly how a Skyline Jetski rental goes, from booking to coming back into Diversey Harbor — A Dock.

1. Book your slot

Reserve online and pick your duration — anything from 30 minutes at $100 on a weekday up to a 3 Hours ride. Reservations are strongly recommended; walk-ins are not guaranteed.

2. Arrive 45 minutes early

Every rental requires arriving at least 45 minutes before departure. Bring a physical photo ID and the card you booked with, and give yourself extra time for lakefront parking on warm weekends.

3. Gear up and get trained

Staff fit your life jacket, attach the safety lanyard, and walk you through the machine and the ride area. Ask questions here — it is the best moment to get comfortable.

4. Ride the lakefront

  • Start slow until steering with throttle feels natural — jet skis turn using thrust.
  • Keep your head up and scan for boats, buoys, and swimmers.
  • Stay inside the briefed area; the Playpen and Chicago River are off limits.
  • Watch your clock — late returns cost $5 per minute.
